Desert rock wears down not in dramatic storms but through the day’s daily heat swings. When the sun climbs, minerals in a rock expand at different rates; when night falls they contract, but not in lockstep. That misfit pushes and pulls on the rock’s skin, and across years those tiny strains accumulate into visible cracks.
