The Day the Earth Grew a Bit Closer

In 1859, astronomers witnessed a rare celestial event known as a "black drop" during a solar eclipse. The alignment actually changed Earth's shape for a brief moment! Fishermen in Norway reported strange tides, and scientists learned that our planet isn't a perfect sphere. This marked the first understanding of tidal deformation caused by celestial alignments.
